About Agra

Agra has a reputation as being an unpleasant city with some magnificent buildings and picturesque riverside scenery. Most foreign visitors choose not to spend the night in Agra, instead opting to travel by train or bus back to Delhi which has a better range of hotels and restaurants.

Here at India Trains we don’t agree with that view. Firstly, even if your main interest in coming to Agra is to view its two main attractions, the Taj Mahal and the Red Fort, you should experience both at different times of the day. The light changes throughout the day and you can best appreciate the colours of the buildings either very in the morning or at dusk. Staying in a hotel near to the Taj Mahal overnight affords you the opportunity to enjoy the romantic views of the Taj Mahal from the banks of the Yamuna River whilst flock of green parrots fly overhead and the giant fruit bats wake up and start to fly around. Both the Taj Mahal and the Red Fort are experiences as much as they are historic buildings and to properly appreciate them you need to allow yourself some time. The other reason to stay a bit longer in Agra is that there are lots of other things to see and do. The Mughal Emperor built lots of interesting monuments in the area including the Tomb of Akbar at Sikandra. Agra also has some very lively temples and a botanical garden. A day spending touring these sites in an auto rickshaw is an experience you likely to enjoy.
