About Lotus Temple in Delhi


The Lotus Temple in Delhi is a Bahá’í place of worship. The Lotus temple conforms to the Bahá’í rules about the construction of a temple in that it must be circular and have 9 sides. The Lotus Temple is, however, unqiue amongst Bahá’í places of worship in that it has no dome, and because of its size. The Lotus Temple is shaped like a flower with 27 free standing petal shaped structures clad in Greek marble reaching a total height of 34.27 metres. The inside of the temple is, in keeping with the tenets of the Bahá’í faith, completely bear with no altar or pictures or other adornments. This master piece of minimalist architecture can accommodate a congregation of an estimated 2,500 people, although in the Bahá’í faith there are set time or formats for worship so the building rarely gets that full. The Lotus Temple is surrounded by 9 ponds. one on each side, and gardens with the site taking up a total area of over 100,000 sqm. Over 100 million people have already visited the Lotus Temple since its completion in 1986 making it one of the visited buildings in the world.

The Lotus Temple is located 6.7 km from Delhi’s Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station. Entrance to the temple is free and its open everyday from 09:30 to 17:00 except on Mondays when its closed.
