About the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai

The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai is India’s most famous hotel, and for some its best hotel. The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel first opened for business in December 1903 and has been continuously in use as a hotel ever since except for a period during World War I when the hotel was used a hospital and for a few months following an attack by terrorists in 2008. The hotel was developed by a well known Indian industrialist, Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, who also founded the Tata Group, which today is one of the largest companies in India.

The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai is currently the flagship hotel of the Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces Group featuring 560 rooms, 44 suites and 9 restaurants. The hotel has a large staff of over 1,600 full time employees and the inner workings of the hotel have been the subject of several television documentaries. The main part of the hotel looks a lot like an Indian Palace, although the newer wing of the hotel is less architectural impressive with the appearance of a concrete office tower. The Taj Palace Hotel has one of the best locations in Mumbai City Centre overlooking the Arabian Sea and only 70 metres walk away from the pedestrianised area around the famous Gateway of India Monument. Lots of the world’s most famous and important people of the last 100 years have stayed at this hotel, and for around $250 USD you could also book a good room at The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel and a suite fit for a king (plenty have stayed) will cost from $900 to $1,500 a night.
