About Marine Drive in Mumbai

Marine Drive is an iconic stretch of road running 3.6 km along the seafront in Central Mumbai from Nariman Point to Chowpatty Beach. The promenade that runs between the road and the sea is one of the few pedestrianised areas in Mumbai and somewhere frequently used for walking and jogging. At night the road is lit up with light coming from the seafront building earning Marine Drive the nick name of the ‘Queen’s Necklace’ on account of the string of bright lights having the appearance of glistening jewels. Marine Drive is one of the main the focal points of the city and property along this road is some of the most expensive in India.

Marine Drive in Mumbai

Marine Drive connects the housing of the wealthy suburb of Nariman Point to Mumbai’s financial district making it the main commuter route for the city’s richest inhabitants and you see very expensive cars driving up and down Marine Drive in stark contrast to the less expensive vehicles which cram the roads in other parts of the city. Chowpatty Beach at the top end of Marine Drive, however, is a place where people on normal incomes come to enjoy themselves eating a wide variety of foods at the many inexpensive foodstalls that line the sand and swimming in the very polluted waters off the beach. Foreign visitors to Chowpatty Beach are strongly advised to stay out of the water and avoid eating there as the risk of infections and food poisoning is very high.
