Golden Temple in Amritsar

The Golden Temple in Amritsar, also known as Darbar Sahib and the Harmandir Sahib, is the most important site for the Sikh religion. According to legend the area where the Golden Temple now stands was once a forest with a lake where the Lord Buddha came to meditate and also later Guru Nanak, founder of the Sikh faith. The Golden Temple complex was first constructed in 1577, then rebuilt and expanded upon many times over the following centuries. The Sikh people and their main temple have faced violent persecution from many different nations and people of many other faiths over the years and each time the temple has been destroyed it has been rebuilt which is testament to resilience of people of the Sikh faith. Anyone and everyone is welcome to visit the temple, there is no entrance fee and visitors are provided a free meal if they wish to accept. Over 100,000 people visit a day so bear this in mind of you go: it’s not a tourist attraction as such, but a crowded centre of a significant world faith.
