About Travel to Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer is located to the west of Jaipur in the Thar Desert. The city itself is positioned on a sandstone ridge in an arid area known for extremes of temperature. Jaisalmer is dominated by the Golden Fort, also commonly known as Jaisalmer Fort, which is unique both in its design and for being fully inhabited with shops and hotels for tourists who wish to stay overnight in this historic site. The fort was built in the 12th Century. It is situated on a hill overlooking the rest of the city which which was developed from the 17th Century as the local population grew beyond the capacity of the defensive walls, which are 4 km long. Other impressive structures include:
- Bada Bagh: empty tombs located 6 km outside the city.
- Patwon-ki-Haveli: Collection of five old houses built by a wealthy local family.
- Tanot Mata Temple: 9th Century Hindu temple near the border with Pakistan.

The other reason many visitors come to Jaisalmer is to go camel trekking. There are lots of companies offering inexpensive camel safaris through the Thar Desert, typically lasting 2 to 7 days. Tourists each ride a different camel with tents, food and water carried on a cart pulled by another camel. Before booking we suggest that you shop around enquiring after prices and itineraries, as well as seeking recommendations from other travellers in the backpacker hangouts in the city.
