About Travel to Pune

Pune is a modern dynamic city with lots of university students, a liberal atmosphere, a thriving IT industry and a long history. Pune attracts fewer foreign tourists than better known destinations such as Mumbai, Agra and Jaipur, but those who do visit there are plenty of interesting places to visit before in the city itself and surrounding countryside. Inside the city itself the most popular tourist attractions include the Shaniwar Wada Fort, which constructed in the early 18th Century, the Pataleshwar Caves, which feature a temple cut into the rock in the 8th Century, and the Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum, which has a wide range of exhibited housed within a Rajasthani style building.

However, arguably the most interesting places to visit are some distance away from Pune city centre and a private car would be beneficial in terms of easily accessing these site. The area around Pune is known for its hill forts, the best of which is the Rajgad Fort, and a number of significant cave temples. Of the cave temples we suggest that the best ones to visit are the Bedse Caves, which include the Bhaja Caves, Karla Caves, Patan Buddhist Cave and Nasik Caves. These caves, dedicated to the Lord Buddha, are believed to have been carved out of the rock in the 1st Century. From Pune you can travel by train to Kamshet Railway Station and from there its a 9.6 km journey by road to reach the Bedse Caves.
