City Palace in Udaipur
The City Palace is Udaipur’s main tourist attraction. The City Palace is a sprawling complex of palaces and other buildings built over several centuries from 1553 onward. The City Palace is one of the largest royal residences in Rajasthan, a region of Indian famed for its palaces. The buildings are constructed out entirely from marble and granite and reflect a wide range of architectural style including Mughal, European, Chinese as well as native Rajasthani architecture. In these respects Udaipur’s City Palace is unique.

City Palace is still owned by the same family which built it, although they lost considerable power when they signed a treaty aligning themselves to the British in 1818 and then subsequently their royal titles when Udaipur joined a newly independent India in 1948. Large palaces like the one in Udaipur are very expensive to operate and maintain and the previously ruling family have managed to fund this massive expensive by opening the palace as a tourist attraction, letting out shop spaces, and creating a luxury hotel in the Fateprakash Palace. There is an entrance of 500 INR for foreign visitors, and 250 INR for Indian nationals, to the City Palace, which is open every day from 09:30 to 17:30.
