About Travel to Udaipur
Along with Jodphur, Jaipur and Jaisalmer, Udaipur is one of the four major tourist centres in the desert state of Rajasthan. One of the things that sets Udaipur apart from the other major cities in Rajasthan is its series of 7 large lakes located in and around the city centre. The most famous of these lakes is Lake Pichola located right in the centre of the city. Udaipur’s top tourist attraction, and its largest palace, known simply as City Palace, is located on the edge of Lake Pichola. The former ruling family of Udaipur has retained ownership of the City Palace. City Palace is open to fee paying visitors, and also contains an expensive hotel. On the lake itself are two further royal palaces built on islands. One of these palaces, the Lake Palace, was used a film set in the James Bond movie ‘Octopussy’. The Lake Palace has also been transformed into a luxury hotel. The other palace on an island in Lake Pichola is the Jag Mandir, which was built in stages over the 16th and 17th centuries.

Beyond Lake Pichola also of note are the Monsoon Palace, and the city’s green spaces, particular the Saheliyon-ki-Bari and the Gulab Bagh and Bird Park. The Monsoon Palace is a palace constructed on a hilltop in the the 19th Century with excellent views across Udaipur. The Saheliyon-ki-Bari is the Gardens of the Maidens, created in the built in the 18th century. Established in in 1884, the Gulab Bagh and Bird Park is the largest garden in Rajasthan state and features a zoo and bird park.
