About Travel to Agra

From 1526 to 1638 Agra was the capital city of the Mughal Empire, which at the time ruled over a significant proportion of South Asia. The fantastic wealth of the Mughal Empire funded the construction of some of the world’s most impressive buildings in Agra, and this makes the city was a popular destination for foreign and domestic tourists. Modern day Agra is no longer a political centre, although it is a large city with more than 1.5 million permanent residents. Agra itself is often perceived by visitors as chaotic, dirty and full of people trying to overcharge or steal from tourists. Whether or not this is correct, Agra is nonetheless a place well worth visiting to see the amazing buildings, and the city has lots of hotels and restaurants focussed on catering to the needs of both foreign and domestic tourists.

The big two toruist attractions in Agra are the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. The Taj Mahal is very impressive, and best viewed at several different times of the day from a variety of vantage points. A walk along the river behind the Taj Mahal before sunset is particularly rewarding, and worth staying overnight in the city near the Taj Mahal to experience. Agra Fort pre-dates the Taj Mahal by about 100 years. Agra Fort is large, covering 380,000 square metres, and surrounded by a high double thickness wall. Inside the walls is a range of buildings constructed over a period of three centuries in a variety of architectural styles. What makes Agra Fort stand out from other military installations of the same period is the ornate design work in the defensive walls and buildings inside. It’s as much a work of art as it is a fort.
