About Travel to Jodhpur
The skyline of Jodhpur, a city of over 1.5 million residents, is dominated by the massive Mehrangarh Fort. The Mehrangarh Fort was constructed on top of a 125 metre high steep sided hill located in an otherwise flat landscape at the edge of the Thar desert. The 36 metre high defensive walls add to the visual impact of the fort, as does the enormous 5 square kilometre footprint of the compound. The city’s ancestral rulers moved out of the fort, and into the spectacular newly built Umaid Bhawan Palace, in the middle of the 20th Century. The Mehrangarh Fort is now a major tourist attraction open daily from 09:00 to 17:00. The most best time to visit is in the late afternoon when the temperature begins to drop and you can see the daily ritual feeding of the eagles at 15:30 from a tower within the fort.

From the 15th Century onwards, when the Mehrangarh Fort was established, the city of Jodhpur has expanded beyond the defensive walls onto the plains below and there are number of other points of interest to visit in and around the city. Within the city itself the Old Town features a dense series of streets where the buildings are blue. These narrow streets are home to a wide variety of different small workshops turning out hand made craftworks and a wander around this maze of walkways is one the must do activities in Jodhpur.
The other major attractions in Jodhpur are located outside the confines of the city:
- Mandore, the former capital, is located 7 km road from Jodhpur.
- The Jaswant Thada, an impressive marble memorial building, is close to the Mehrangarh Fort.
- The red standstone Khejarla Fort is located 85 km from Jodhpur.
