About Travel to Pune
Pune is a large vibrant city notable for its green spaces, large student population, thriving IT industry and liberal attitude to alcohol and Western style night life. As well as being one of the more pleasant places in India to live, there are also a wide range of points of interest both in the city itself and in the surrounding countryside. The most prominent attractions in the city centre are the Shaniwar Wada Fort and the Pataleshwar Caves. The Shaniwar Wada Fort is an 18th Century Fort, much of which was burnt down in the 19th Century after the British army established a base there. What remains of the Shaniwar Wada Fort, particularly its formal gardens, is still well worth visiting. The Pataleshwar Caves feature a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva cut from the rock in the 8th Century.

Arguably the best tourist attractions in the area, however, are located some distance from Pune city centre. There are lots of hill stations within easy travelling distance of Pune that are very popular with domestic tourists and only partially discovered by contemporary foreign visitors, although they were well known to British during colonial times. The hills around Pune also feature a number of hill forts, some of which you need to trek up to . The Bedse Caves, 55 km to the north west of Pune Junction Railway Station, are also particularly noteworthy. There are two main temples carved into this cave complex in the 1st Century. Both are remarkably ornate and if you are in Pune we suggest you take a trip to see these caves. which are 9.6 km by road to the south of Kamshet Railway Station.
