About Travel to Gorakhpur
If you are travelling overland from India to Nepal then Gorakhpur is where you need to travel to first in order to take local transport to the border crossing at Sounali. From Gorakphur to either Kathmandu or Pokhara it’s an all day journey so we recommend that you start that journey early in the morning. The area around the Indian side of border at Sounali can be dangerous and we recommend against spending time there at night.
Sounali is located approximately 100 km from Gorakphur. There are three forms of local transport you can take from Gorakphur to Sounali, all of which conveniently depart from Gorakphur Junction Railway Station:
- Private car: Approximately 1 hour
- Public bus: Approximately 2 hours
- Train: Approximately 3 hours

Once you have crossed over the border at Sounali then you have two transport options: taxi or bus. There are a variety of different destinations you can travel to. Most visitors, however, will be travelling to either Kathmandu or Pokhara, both of which take about the same time to get to, which is 5 to 8 hours depending on whether you take a taxi or a bus and how many delays you encounter on route. Taxis depart from right by the border. The bus station for services to Kathmandu or Pokhara is a few kilometres away from the border in Bhairahawa. Bus services to both Kathmandu and Pokhara tend to depart either in the morning before 11:00, or in the afternoon or evening after 17:00 to travel overnight.
