About Travel to Jodhpur

Jodhpur is a city of 1.5 million permanent residents located in the North Western state of Rajasthan on the periphery of the Thar Desert. Jodphur is overlooked by the hill top Mehrangarh Fort which covers an area of around 5 square kilometres. Construction of the Mehrangarh Fort began in the early 15th Century and over the centuries new buildings have been added. The fort still belongs to the same family which originally built it although it has been transformed from a functional palace into a museum and tourist attraction which is open daily from 09:00 to 17:00. Of particular note is the daily feeding of eagles from a tower at the fort, which takes place at 15:30 throughout the year.

Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur

Jodhpur’s ancestral royal family moved out of the Mehrangarh Fort in the middle of the 20th Century to a newly constructed palace, the Umaid Bhawan Palace. The Umaid Bhawan Palace is an architectural masterpiece which is reminiscent of the architectural style of traditional Rajasthani palaces. Half of the palace is used as the home of the former royal family, and the other half has been turned into a hotel and restaurant. The Umaid Bhawan Palace is also one of India’s most famous (and expensive) wedding venues. Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra were married at the Umaid Bhawan Palace in 2018. Non guests can view the palace from the outside.
