About Travel to Madurai

Madurai is the third largest city in Tamil Nadu State in Southern India. The centre of the city, which has 1.5 million permanent residents, is dominated by the Arulmigu Meenakshi Sundareshwarar Temple, often referred to simply as the Meenakshi Temple. The Meenakshi Temple is a Hindu temple that was constructed in the 17th Century and is a popular place of worship which attracts large number of pilgrims. The temple covers an area of 56,000 sqm and features 14 gopuram towers ranging from 40 to 50 metres in height. Gopuram towers are a distinctive feature of temple architecture in Tamil Nadu and are traditionally covered in carvings depicting gods and other important figures from Hindu mythology. The gopuram towers at the Meenakshi Temple are arguably the best example of this distinctive architectural feature and a reason in themselves to visit Madurai.
