About Travel to Udaipur

Udaipur is a city of around 500,00 people situated in the south of the State of Rajasthan. Udaipur is different in many ways to the other three cities in Rajasthan which also attract large numbers of visitors: Jaipur, Jodphur and Jaisalmer.

Lakes in Udaipur

One of the things that makes Udaipur different is that it is a city of lakes. There are many lakes in Udaipur, seven of which are considered to be major lakes. The most significant of which is Lake Pichola.

Lake Pichola

There are three palaces either in Lake Pichola or around it:

  • City Palace: This palace was built in the 16th Century as the main residence of the local royal family. The family no longer lives in the building and a number of major alterations have been made to it since the 16th Century. Among the alterations are the creation of a luxury hotel in one part of the buildings, and the conversion of much of the rest of the building into a museum open to visitors.
  • Jag Mandir: The Jag Mandir is one of two palaces built on a man-made island in the lake. The construction of the palace took around 100 years to complete from the mid 16th Century to the mid 17th Century.
  • Lake Palace: Lake Palace is the second of the two palaces built on an island in Lake Pichola, and by far the more famous of the two as it featured in the James Bond movie Octopussy. Lake Palace is now a very expensive hotel.

  • Saheliyon-ki-Bari: This 18th Century formal garden is the ‘Garden of the Maidens’.
  • Gulab Bagh and Bird Park: This park incorporates a zoo and a collection of birds in aviaries. When it opened in 1884 it was one of the first of its kind in India. The Gulab Bagh and Bird Park is still the largest public park in Rajasthan and a cherished legacy from the period of British rule.
